Jacob’s diversity is one of the reasons why his work can be found in so many collections around the world five centuries on. These range from single prints to altarpieces and from religious paintings to book illustrations. Given the global distribution of his oeuvre, it is all the more remarkable that so many works have been assembled here in the Netherlands for this exhibition in Alkmaar and Amsterdam.
Multi-tasker
For Jacob, being a master artist meant mastery of a diversity of arts. He made large altarpieces, small panels portraying intimate scenes, portraits, woodcuts, designs for liturgical vestments and stained-glass windows. He also managed a workshop of apprentices and assistants. Moreover he knew how to network, remaining in contact with leading patricians and churchmen of Holland.
