The sultan had around forty weapon bearers, mostly of Persian origin. They would run backwards ahead of their master with their eyes fixed on the sultan - as long as the road surface permitted. As they ran, they repeated loudly: ‘Alaù Deicherim!’ - meaning ‘God, preserve his power for many years!’
The Seliktar Aghassi’s costume was made of satin, woven in various colours. The wide, striped-silk belt was long enough to wind three times round the waist. Attached to the belt was a beciach, a dagger decorated with ivory and fishbone. His headgear was a siuf, a hat made of gilt silver, and sometimes surmounted by a plume of small coloured bird-feathers.
