This summer the Amsterdam Museum presents a 40 meter long runner designed by artist Barbara Broekman, in the Schuttersgallerij of the Museum. This carpet shows the 179 nationalities that are currently living in Amsterdam.

With people from almost 180 nationalities, Amsterdam is one of the world’s most diverse cities. In today’s discourse, differences between peoples are often reduced to a simple them and us. Them and us is the diverse world of people in Amsterdam who come from countries such as Cameroon, Serbia, Peru, Australia, Zambia, Switzerland or Morocco.
Artist Barbara Broekman sought a way to make the cultural diversity that distinguishes the capital’s population today more visible. In 2000, she began an extensive study into textiles from the various countries of origin, encountering an amazing range of clothes, carpets, tablecloths and headdress. She chose a single outstanding, characteristic detail from each country, such as Belgian lace, Turkish carpet or a South African Zulu garment.
The carpet is on show for six months, free for everyone to see and everyone to walk on.
The realization of this carpet is partly achieved thanks to the support of Desso, Estillon, Hamat and Kokkelkoren.
