The Tchavouch Bachi walked ahead of the sultan. He also accompanied foreign ambassadors when they came in procession to the sultan’s audience. As he made his ceremonial way, with each step he would tick on the ground with his staff, to announce the visitors. The silver ceremonial staff was surmounted by a crescent moon finial, symbolising Islam.
