In 1998, art historian Xander van Eck (b. 1962) had his fifteen minutes of fame on Turkish television when he took part in a Pamukkale song festival. Supported by his wife Güniz, he sang ‘Allahım neydi günahım’ (My God, what did I do wrong?) by Turkish troubadour Kayahan. Ten years later Van Eck and his family moved to Turkey. He teaches art history and fashion theory at Izmir University of Economics. Sometimes Van Eck longs to be back in Amsterdam. He misses the bicycle paths most of all.
