Wolfert van ’t Hooft (b. 1949) was born and bred in Istanbul. His grandfather, Jan van ’t Hooft, moved to the city early in the twentieth century. Van ’t Hooft is Dutch, although he hardly speaks the language. For his work at the Turkish Iş Bankası bank he travels extensively and even spent four years as an expat in Holland. He looks forward to the Queen’s birthday each year, when he gets to eat a herring at the Dutch consulate.
