Capital of the Dutch East India Company
When Jan Pieterszoon Coen captured Jakarta in 1619 the entire city was destroyed. Batavia was built on its ashes. It was designed according to the Dutch model, and the city plan did not look like an urban centre in a tropical environment but more like a Dutch town in the polder. The only thing that betrays its exotic location is the presence of the native servants.
