The Amsterdam Museum has been focusing on the subject of polyphony (multiperspectivity) for several years, but how do we actually deal with multilingualism? How do we engage with a non-Dutch-speaking audience, or with partners or a colleague who does not speak Dutch? How can we include more languages in our exhibitions than the existing Dutch and English language offerings? We will discuss this matter with each other on the basis of concrete examples from our permanent and temporary exhibitions.
As part of the AM all-in project, we organize a meeting on a theme related to diversity and inclusion every last Tuesday of the month. This month the thema is multilingualism. The meetings are interactive and we would like to ask you to come and participate, but also to do a little preparation:
Choose an object that is on display at AM at the Amstel of which you think it would be of added value to give attention to languages other than Dutch and English by means of an extra text sign, an audio stop or in another way. You don't have to write a new text or audio stop yourself, the point is that you choose an object where you think an extra language would add value.
Bring an image of the object (or send a digital image in advance) of your choice to the meeting on 26-07.
To have an idea of how many people will be present on Tuesday, it would be nice if you can let us know if you will attend, either by replying to this post or by sending an email to AMall-in@amsterdammuseum.nl.
