Alle culturele expressie gaat over geur, kleur, geluid en beweging, over traditie en over vernieuwing. In het werk van Marcel Pinas zie ik al die elementen en hoor ik het geluid van vogels en bomen. Elke kunstenaar is bijzonder, omdat ze de cultuur van hun land bewaken en uitdragen. Pinas noemt dat Kibri a Kulturu.
Het ene schilderij heeft afbeeldingen van het Afaka schrift. Een schrift dat door de afstammelingen van gevluchte slaven is gemaakt, het andere de traditionele houten huizen in Paramaribo.
Ik mis het werk van Pinas en andere jonge niet-Westerse kunstenaars in de Nederlandse musea, dat zou een mooie manier zijn om elkaars cultuur en tradities beter te begrijpen.

All cultural expressions are about scent, color, sound, movement, and about tradition and innovation. The art of Marcel Pinas has alle these elements. When I look at these pictures I hear the sound of birds and trees. Every artist is the keeper of a culture. Pinas uses the Surinamese term: Kibri a Kultura.
One painting uses the Afaka script, made by people that escaped from slavery, the other shows the traditional wooden houses in Paramaribo.
I miss seeing work from Pinas and other non-Western artitists in Dutch museums, it would be a good way to understand each other's culture and traditions.
